China’s new energy mining truck market is entering a phase of rapid growth, driven by the country’s “dual-carbon” goals and the mining industry’s push to reduce emissions. According to recent industry reports, sales of new energy mining trucks in China exceeded 1,500 units in 2023, with projections indicating that sales will surpass 2,000 units by 2025.
In May 2025, CCTV-13’s News Live highlighted the commissioning of China’s first 100-unit pure electric unmanned mining truck fleet. These vehicles can be fully charged in under an hour, with a single battery swap taking less than six minutes. With a payload capacity of 90 tons and a range of approximately 60 kilometers on a full charge, the fleet represents a major step toward intelligent and green mining operations.
Leading domestic manufacturers are actively expanding their presence in this emerging segment:
XCMG delivered 100 ZNK95 pure electric unmanned mining trucks to the Huaneng Yimin Open-Pit Mine in May, marking the start of commercial operations for the world’s largest fleet of its kind. Since entering the sector in 2019, XCMG has developed a full range of new energy mining vehicles, including pure electric, hydrogen fuel cell, and hybrid models, with products deployed in multiple major mining sites across China.

SANY has been developing pure electric mining trucks since 2019 and now offers models ranging from 60 to 300 tons, including hybrid, range-extended, and pure electric variants. In 2025 alone, the company has secured multiple batch orders, including deliveries to limestone and aggregate mines in Hubei, Sichuan, and Xinjiang.

Zoomlion continues to lead in the large-tonnage hybrid mining truck segment with its flagship ZTE520, the world’s largest hybrid mining truck with a payload of 300 tons. The truck incorporates high-power AC drive control technology derived from China’s high-speed rail systems, delivering a 16% performance improvement,10% higher transport efficiency, and 15% energy savings compared to conventional models. All core components are domestically produced, ensuring supply chain security.

Weichai Power and CATL are also strengthening their roles in the mining energy ecosystem. Weichai recently launched its second-generation mining power solutions, including methanol and natural gas engines, while CATL introduced the “Tianxing” heavy-duty truck battery series, featuring enhanced durability and safety for rugged mining environments.

Despite strong growth, the industry still faces challenges such as inadequate charging infrastructure in remote mining areas, high upfront costs, and product homogenization. However, with continued policy support, technological advances, and growing demand for sustainable mining, the new energy mining truck sector is poised for further expansion.

Industry observers believe that collaboration across the value chain, continued R&D investment, and supportive policies will be key to overcoming current barriers and unlocking the full potential of green mining transportation.
